Old Book, New Cover

I ordered some copies of "May I Please Have a Cookie?" this week and was surprised to see that there was no red border on the covers. I guess after four years, Alfie was ready for a face lift. Well, it's not just Alfie that's getting a face lift. Scholastic is in the process of changing the cover format of all their easy reader books.

PTO Gift Basket

I finished my gift basket for the PTO fundraiser next weekend. Along with both of my books, I added an Alfie T-Shirt and an Alfie Mug both of which I ordered from Zazzle. I made an Alfie keyring from Shrinky Dink material that you can put through your inkjet printer (very cool stuff!) And I added a few bookmarks. I'm not very good at arranging gift baskets but I think it turned out okay.

"On a Dark, Dark Night" Available for Pre-order

Even though I've known for ages the book is coming out this fall. I still got excited today when I saw it was listed on Amazon and available for pre-order. Some how it seems more official now. More info about the book is available on my website.

Illustration Friday - Subtract

Earth - (Ice + Snow) = Spring

Okay, I know this is a stretch but it's the first day of spring - couldn't resist having a spring theme. There were crocus blooming in my front yard today! I even changed the colors on my website to pinks and blues.

On a Dark, Dark Night - Final Book Trailer

The picture book I illustrated entitled, "On a Dark, Dark Night," is scheduled to be released this fall so I thought it would be nice to create a little book trailer in advance of it's release. In case you're wondering a book trailer is a lot like a movie trailer only for a book of course.

This is my first experience with MS Movie Maker and it's been a lot of fun. I can see where you could spend hours and hours playing with it. But alas I don't have that much time to spend on it right now so here's the final version of the book trailer for On a Dark, Dark Night...

If you would like more information about the book, visit the "On a Dark, Dark Night" page on my main website.

The Slipcover Queen

When we remodeled our attic into my new studio space almost 2 years ago, I had envisioned a red sofa along the back wall. At the time I didn't have a red sofa. I had an ugly beige sofa with an even uglier slipcover on it. I'm the slipcover queen (it drives my husband nuts). And the old sofa was going to be my next victim.

Soon after the studio was done I ran out to the fabric store and bought about 10 yards of red denim. I propped the roll of fabric in the corner and promised myself as soon as things slowed down I would make the slipcover. Well things never slow down around here. But after 2 years I couldn't stand it anymore and I finally sat down at the sewing machine. And I'm so glad I did. I wish I had a propper before pic. This is the best I could find, you can see the old slipcover with the frilly little flower..

Here's the new and improved sofa. Not only is the slipcover better looking but my construction methods have vastly improved. I think this one will hold together much better than the old one. I should mention that this isn't exactly a slipcover. The cushion covers have zippers and are removable but I attached the cover on to the main part of the sofa with a heavy duty staple gun. It's somewhere between re-upholstering and a slipcover. Slipostering maybe?

I also made some pillow covers. The fabric store was going out of business and I bought up a bunch of fabric swatches and hugely discounted fringe and made these patchwork throw pillows. I was pretty happy with the way they turned out.

Now I have to paint the closet doors...

Alfie the Alligator Gift Basket

Alfie the Alligator Mug (Front)

Mug Back

I'm putting together a gift basket to be raffled off by the PTO of my kid's school. I thought it would be fun to do an Alfie theme and I just got this mug and t-shirt in the mail today. I ordered them from Zazzle.com. I'm really pleased with the quality of the products. I think I need to order another one of these mugs for my son. It's pretty appropriate. You can see how the image wraps around the mug better here.

Truth is Stranger than Fiction

It seems that I've been on the subject of cats lately and then, coincidentally, I saw this guy on a local news website. He's called "Ugly Bat Boy" and he is one bizarre looking kitty...

Illustration Friday - Intricate

This is a rather large and intricate illustration that I've been working on. I'm sure these cats are singing a very intricate song that only feline ears can appreciate.

I posted this same piece last night but wasn't completely happy with it. I have since gotten some advice and have added some more shadows, I think it was too busy and shadows help to tone it down a bit.

Alley Cats

I'm currently working on a book that has lots of different animals in it but one happens to be a cat. And for some reason, I find cats one of the more difficult animals to draw. So in an attempt to get some practice drawing cats plus test out some new painting techniques in Photoshop, I did this piece. I just finished and I'm not really sure what I think if it yet, but I thought I'd share it anyways.

New Activity Page

Over the next few weeks I hope to reorganize the kids section of my website and I will be adding some new activity and coloring pages. Here's the first, on this one you have to finish the picture by drawing something scary. It's based on the characters from "On a Dark, Dark Night" written by Jean Cochran. The book is scheduled for release later this year. For more color pages visit the kids section of my website.

Does anyone have any ideas of what types of pages I should add? I would love to hear your ideas. My son loves mazes so expect a few of those.
