Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History

The Spellman Museum in Weston, MA is hosting Letter Writing Day on May 16th from 2:00 to 4:00pm.

Please join me at the event as I will be reading my new children's book, Please Write Back! I will be doing a drawing demo and will also have activities on hand for the kids.

Also at the event, author Lois Barry will talk about her adult book, Always First Class - The Pleasure of Writing Letters. I'm looking forward to meeting Lois and picking up a copy of her book.

There will also be free stamps and prizes for the kids. So if you are in the Boston area, please stop by. It should be a lot of fun. I think I'll go dust off my old stamp collection.

Style Experiment

I've been experimenting with a new softer style. While I really like the think dark outlines I usually do, I think they can be too harsh for some subjects like babies. I'm shooting for a cute watercolor sort of feel. This is a scanned pencil drawing colored in Photoshop. What do you think?

This is a little postcard that I put together for poster exhibit at the New England SCBWI conference. I think I may use it for my Photoshop techniques presentation also.

Little Christian Magazine

I have an illustration in Little Christian Magazine this month. This was for an article about Dag Hammarskjold. Obviously this was before he became the UN Secretary General.

iPad and Picture Books

I think everyone in children's publishing is wondering what the iPad means to picture books. Don't get me wrong, I love books, and I love the tactile, low tech experience of sharing a book with a child. But let's face it, how cool would it be to have your child's whole library of books available to you when you go to Grandma's house for the weekend or in the car? Or to be able to find the exact book you are looking for at bedtime? Searching through those skinny picture book spines in the bookcase is a drag. I used to try and organize the them but that lasts about as long as a plate full of cookies in my house.

It's going to be very interesting to see what happens. I don't think traditional books are going to go away, but I think the children's picture book industry is in for some changes. To get a peak of just the sort of things that are possible, check out this iPad adaptation of Alice in Wonderland - very cool stuff!

Please Write Back! on Google Books

I didn't realize Please Write Back! was on Google Books with a nice looking preview. So is May I Please Have a Cookie? but without the preview pages. It was really nice to see all the user reviews out there. Wow, thank you everyone!

Ooo and look, and I'm in a reference book too. I have never actually seen my entry. The local libraries don't have these books, one of these days I'll to track it down.

Illustration For Kids

I belong to a group called Illustration For Kids. Most freelance illustrators I know work out of their homes which is great when you don't feel like showering but it can also pretty lonely. Even if you have people around you, rarely are those folks fellow illustrator that you can talk shop with. So several years ago, seven of us got together and started an internet group called Illustration for Kids to offer each other support and company.

I think one of our best ideas was to pool our money and our mailing lists and do quarterly group postcards mailings. I'm very bad about remember to advertise and these quarterly postcards have been great for me. When there are 6 other people involved it isn't so easy to put postcard mailings off to the side. Here's our latest postcard that went out last week. Below is a closeup of my contribution. Visit the IFK blog for more info about the other artist's work.

My friends and family are probably sick of hearing about Alfie. But here's a little book trailer that I put together for the new book, Please Write Back!

Oh, did I mention that there is a new Alfie book out this month? It's called Please Write Back! :)
