Bus Stop Wildlife

My daughter noticed this unusual visitor sitting in the bush outside our door this morning. He looked so funny sitting in the very top of the bush like a Halloween decoration. Seeing the snake prompted me to bring my camera to the bus stop to take pictures of all the critter we met along the way. Our house is tucked into the woods and we regularly meet all sorts of things. This morning I met this chipmunk on the way back to the house. He lives under my front stoop with about 40 of his closest relatives.

And on damp mornings like today we always run into at least one red salamander. Today we found two.

Wow Jennifer, I think I stay with the chipmunk, the snake I'm not so fond of ;o)

Ha! Those are GREAT! You have all kinds of great ideas for stories with those critters around!

You are SO lucky to be surrounded by such cute wildlife. I love snakes and, though we are supposed to have some in the UK, I've never ever seen one.

And salamanders every day!

My Father in law would just die for a chipmunk on the doorstep - he feeds all the local squirrels (the extent of our 'wildlife') with monkey nuts. They even recognise him in the street now, and follow him home for food.

How lucky are you then? What wouldn't I give to see salamanders and chipmunks when I go out. The most exciting things I see are sheep, cows and horses. I always hope I'll meet the odd camel or elephant, but so far no luck!

Lynne, we are completely over run with chipmunks. I'm always shooing them out of the garage and the grill. One almost dove into our pitcher of lemonade one day. I'd be happy to mail your father-in-law a few. How many would he like? ;)

Wow, that's an education in itself!
Glad you could steady the camera long enough to take the picture, I would have been freaking out!

Wow you are so lucky to see such wonderful animals daily! Here in Australia we sometimes get blue tongue lizards in our garden and before the area was developed with more housing we used to get kangaroos hopping around the street and leaving little round "presents" on the drive way ;)

Our critters are tree frogs and spiders! The tree frogs love to congregate around the porch light for the buffet of bugs that swarm near it!

BTW, got a copy of the Sept High Five with your Backpack illustrations. Very cute!!

I love this! We have a collection of critters all around our home as well. There are 65 acres of forest at our back door. Most of our visitors are the froggie, chipmunkie, dragonfly kind. However we do have an occasional bear and a herd of deer as well as a flock of turkeys that like to wander through at times.

Good wishes for your book appearances!

eeeeek! I would really be horrified with the snake. The chipmunk is cute. The series of pictures could make a good story lol.
