Illustration Friday - Drifting

The cold mist seeped through Jesse's skin. Everything felt numbly mechanical, even the somber rhythm of the waves. Normally Jess loved to be on the water, but today was different. This was not a sunny jaunt around the harbor. This was for keeps.

Thank You Notes

I got such a nice surprise the other day when I received a big pile of thank you notes from the kids at the Lunenburg Primary School. I love, love, love letters from kids! During my visit this past week, we brainstormed story ideas for pirate characters, so I thought it was SO cool when many of kids had decorated their cards with their very own pirate characters. These weren't your run-of-the-mill pirates, matey! We had elephant pirates...

and giraffe pirates (no crow's nest needed)...

and even these two dangerous looking characters. I especially like the orange guy wielding the mace...

I wish I had time to show them all. They were all terrific! Argh, thank you for making my day, me hearties! I had a great time at your school!

I'm a Twit!

Okay, this is not really news, folks have been calling me a twit since elementary school. But once I signed up for a Twitter account. I thought that finally being a twit has a more favorable connotation. I was finally part of the in-crowd. I was a "twit"!

But alas, I googled "Twitter twit" and from what I understand, a Twitter twit is someone who "tweets" incessantly about the minutia of their life. Gack! I barely have time to slog through the minutia of my life, let alone have time to rehash it in little bite-sized "tweets". So technically, I guess I'm not a Twitter twit. I'm just the same old run-of-the-mill twit I've always been, only now I've got a Twitter account! :)

Illustration Friday - Unfold

Okay this is probably more appropriate for "fold" rather than "unfold" but I guess you have to unfold him to make his mouth open. I've been making these silly little puppets this week. I thought they would be more fun then just creating a plain old coloring page. Here's a photo of the monster one I made. I created a PDF of the monster puppet along with folding instructions if anyone wants to make their own.

Monster Finger Puppets

I've added a new activity to my website. This is a super simple paper folding project. All you need a sheet of paper and some crayons and you can have your very own pet monster. Click here to download puppets and folding instructions. When you print your monster turn off the "scale to page" option or the face might not line up with the folds properly.

Also visit the kid's section of my website to check out more activities and coloring pages.

Grocery store find

One of the fun things about doing design work is that you never know when you might stumble across one of your designs in a store. I was in the grocery store the other day. I really wasn't in the mood to go grocery shopping but I knew ketchup and saltines for dinner wasn't going to cut it for dinner. As I slogged through the last aisle I was surprised to see the bakery department was decorated with mylar balloons that had my froggy design on them. I covertly snapped a photo on my cell phone. People probably thought I was a kook taking photos of the scones.

Finished My Oil Painting Class

I finished up my oil painting class this morning. I hope to take the class again next year. I've got a lot to learn but I really enjoyed working with oils. Above is a landscape I did from a photo.

Here is my painting of still life number two.

Theo Jansen's Creatures

This is the most completely amazing thing anyone has ever done with electrical conduit and lemonade bottles. WOW!...

Illustration Friday - Adapt (2)

I don't have much time this week but I couldn't resist doing another one. Here's the first sketch I did for "adapt". What if a frog adapted the some of the characteristics of an angler fish? I don't suppose they wouldn't be able to stick out their tongues anymore to catch flies (ouch!)

Baseball Game

I tried out my new travel watercolor set at my son's baseball game last Friday night. Incidentally, I bought it at Michaels not Jerrys. It was fun to get some painting in while still watching the game.
